An Iowa City man was arrested in connection with an incident earlier this month.
According to police, 46-year-old Lavail Drain of East Bloomington Street was at the Town and Campus Apartments March 1st just before 3:30 am, and approached someone sleeping on a couch in one of the apartments. Drain allegedly started to strangle the victim with both hands, waking the victim up and making it hard for them to breathe. Drain reportedly also threatened to kill the victim.
When the victim attempted to leave, Drain allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and threatened the victim. He reportedly struck the victim in the head with the handle of the knife. When the victim fell to the floor, Drain allegedly started to stomp on the victim’s abdomen.
The victim suffered neck pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and speaking. They were transported to a local hospital to be evaluated. Drain and the victim have a no contact order that’s been in effect since July 10th.
A warrant was issued, and Drain was taken into custody Thursday. He has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airflow, Assault committed by a person who has a No Contact Order, and a contempt charge for violating the no-contact order. If convicted on all counts, Drain could be sentenced to up to fifteen years in prison.
