The Trump administration’s “DOGE” initiative has come to Iowa City.
The administration could be selling the former Iowa City Post Office building after deeming it “not core to government operations” as part of government downsizing being led by Elon Musk under the guise of what the billionaire calls the “Department Of Government Efficiency”, or “DOGE”. DOGE is not an official government agency, as it was never approved by Congress.
The Iowa City Federal Building at 400 South Clinton Street was one of 433 government-owned buildings nationwide to receive the “not core” designation from the General Services Administration. The GSA manages federal government-owned properties and created the list to determine which properties should be considered for “disposal”.
The Iowa City Federal Building stopped housing the post office in 2015. It is currently home to the Veterans Health Administration, the U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Reserve recruiting offices. It is unknown what would happen to the current tenants if the building is sold.
After word of the list came out Wednesday, the GSA removed it from its website and replaced it with a message that the list would be released “soon”.
Also on Wednesday, the Trump administration announced the Department of Veterans Affairs would be cutting over 80,000 jobs nationwide.
