Weilein, Swisher Local Option Sales Tax win Tuesday elections

Iowa City city council candidate Oliver Weilein and the Swisher Local Option Sales Tax won Tuesday’s Johnson County special elections.

Weilein earned 4,141 votes as compared to the 2,736 received by his opponent, Ross Nusser. With 23 write-in votes, that gives Weilein 60% of the total vote.

Weilein fills the District C council seat vacated by Andrew Dunn as of January 1st…a term that ends at the end of 2027.

In Swisher, the Local Option Sales Tax earned 36 “Yes” votes to 12 “No”  votes, good for 75% of the total vote. The measure needed at least 60% to pass.
