A 22-year-old Iowa City man faces several charges after a traffic accident Friday night.
Police were called to the area of Westwinds Drive and Mormon Trek Boulevard for a two-vehicle accident with one vehicle flipped.
Jaryn Willis of Ryan Court was one of the individuals involved in the accident. Multiple witnesses alleged that Willis was traveling eastbound on Westwinds Drive and failed to stop at the stop sign, colliding with the other vehicle involved.
Officers approached Willis’ vehicle to obtain his information, but he allegedly exited the vehicle while putting a backpack on. He then reportedly began to run from officers, who ordered him to stop. A foot chase ensued, which resulted in Willis being apprehended. A check of Willis’ driving record reportedly showed his status as suspended as of November 2nd. He was also unable to provide proof of insurance.
A search incident to arrest allegedly recovered a black BB gun. A probable cause search was then conducted on Willis’ vehicle. Inside, officers allegedly found a THC pen and a Styrofoam cup containing alcohol. He reportedly admitted to possession of both items.
Willis was taken to the police station, where he was placed under arrest and told to place his hands behind his back. Willis allegedly failed to comply, causing multiple officers to get involved and force his hands into handcuff position. Once handcuffed, Willis allegedly spit at one officer in the eye.
Willis was charged with two counts of Interference with Official Acts, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Marijuana possession, carrying a toy gun, Driving while Suspended, Failure to provide Proof of Financial Responsibility, Failure to obey Traffic Control Device, and having an Open Container of alcohol. If convicted on all charges, Willis could be sentenced to up to 16 months in jail.
