A fight at Shelter House has led to a felony charge against a local transient.

Iowa City Police say 28-year-old Darnell Lewis and another subject were involved in a fight at the Southgate Avenue facility just before 9:00 Thursday night. The other subject reportedly threw the first punch, and after the two exchanged blows Lewis allegedly knocked the other person to the ground.

Police say the other person stopped fighting back as Lewis continued the assault, including kicking the subject in the head, leading to unconsciousness. Lewis then allegedly kicked the other person in the head one more time after they were out.

Lewis, who lists his address as CommUnity Crisis Services on Gilbert Court, is charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
