Local labor unions will hold a public signing ceremony for a statement to Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks on Thursday urging her to oppose cuts to federal programs and agencies upon which Iowans depend.
The Iowa City Federation of Labor AFL-CIO and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 2547 are co-sponsoring the event, which is set for 5:00 Thursday afternoon at The Kirkwood Room on Kirkwood Avenue.
On Tuesday, Miller-Meeks voted for a budget bill that the two labor unions say will lead to “the illegal termination of frontline workers who serve Iowa veterans, seniors, farmers, and businesses, and who keep the country’s food, water, and airlines safe.”
The unions say Miller-Meeks has likewise not opposed threats from the Trump administration to cut, understaff, or privatize major essential programs and agencies including Medicaid, Social Security, Veteran’s Affairs, USDA, NIH, the U.S. Postal Service, and more.
Iowa is home to over 20,000 federal employees, including more than 7,000 who reside in Iowa’s first Congressional District, represented by Miller-Meeks.
Attendees at Thursday’s event will have the opportunity to join a community petition to be delivered to Miller-Meeks’ Davenport office as part of a rally planned for Thursday, March 6.
