A Hope House resident named “Mack” is back in custody after allegedly failing to return from a furlough.
That’s according to arrest information from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, which indicates 32-year-old Mack Blumingburg of Chicago signed out of the facility on May 1st of last year with the intention of visiting an apartment on Front Street in North Liberty. Blumingburg had a curfew time of 10:00 that night, but he never returned.
Blumingburg is now charged with Absence From Custody. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
In 2023, Blumingburg was sentenced to five years in prison on a charge of Dominion or Control of a Firearm By a Felon. Iowa City Police say Blumingburg fled the scene of a June 2022 car accident that occurred in the area of East College and Gilbert Streets. A witness reported that Blumingburg threw a suitcase over a nearby bridge. Additional officers on scene recovered the suitcase and allegedly found a Taurus 9mm handgun inside.
