The Daily Iowan is reporting that Iowa City City Council candidate Ross Nusser once owed more than $75,000 in federal taxes and credit card debt, leading to a default judgment and wage garnishment.
The information came via an anonymous tip, which the newspaper says has since been corroborated by court and financial records.
According to the Internal Revenue Service, a notice of federal tax lien was filed against Nusser in October of 2018 for the amount of $54,910.18 in unpaid taxes on his Briar Ridge Drive residence.
In a conversation with the DI, Nusser said the debt, unpaid taxes, and a lawsuit filed by American Express were due to divorce proceedings.
Nusser has since addressed the allegations on his “Ross for Iowa City” Facebook page, saying the newspaper’s revelation is actually an opportunity to discuss the obstacles he’s overcome in his life to reach the point where he is today. He also claims the information about his past was released by supporters of his opponent, Oliver Weilein. Nusser claims those same supporters have made threats against his personal safety and made personal attacks involving his children.
Weilein has also been the recent target of attacks, with former Mayor Matt Hayek and others criticizing his support of vandalism of the Old Capitol during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, his past anti-police tweets, and social media posts joking about the murder of United Healthcare CEO and University of Iowa graduate Brian Thompson in New York City.
Nusser and Weilein are running to fill the District C council seat vacated by Andrew Dunn as of January 1st. The election is next Tuesday, but voters can cast their ballots early at the Johnson County Administration Building on South Dubuque Street in Iowa City.
