An audit has turned up potential safety issues at the University of Iowa Health Care downtown medical center.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports an internal audit released this week shows UIHC officials have failed to complete a comprehensive review of badge access, have poorly managed key access, and have failed to maintain an active log of the 290 vendors and contractors who have electronic entry badges. The audit also showed that six of the facility’s 15 universal keys were assigned to people who no longer work there or no longer have business at the hosptial. But the report also shows UIHC has been quick to respond and is addressing the various safety issues.

The audit will be presented to the Board of Regents at its meeting on Thursday in Urbandale.

UIHC took over operations of the former Mercy Iowa City in January of 2024.
