Cedar Rapids Police respond to barricade incident with shots fired; one person arrested

Cedar Rapids Police have arrested a suspect in an overnight standoff who allegedly fired at officers.

According to a news release from the CRPD, at approximately 7:10 Wednesday night officers were conducting an investigation at the Chelsea Apartments at 525 Valor Way SW attempting to locate an individual with outstanding arrest warrants out of Polk County. Officers attempted to contact the person and encountered gunfire from the suspect. Officers returned fire and the suspect retreated into an apartment. A standoff ensued for almost 11 hours.

Officers made repeated attempts to resolve the situation peacefully, and they were able to bring the man into custody at approximately 5:49 Thursday morning.  The individual was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Two officers have been placed on Critical Incident Leave, no officers sustained injuries in the incident, and the CRPD is working with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations and the Linn County Attorney’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation and no further information is available.
