A Coralville man with a lengthy criminal history is now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
50-year-old Jose Checo Cabral of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community is accused of breaking a no-contact order on New Year’s Eve when he tried to call his son to tell him he was being treated at University of Iowa Health Care.
Checo Cabral pleaded guilty to numerous charges in 2022 when he chased his wife through the couple’s trailer with a screwdriver, then threw it at her head. He then is accused of hitting his wife on the wrist with his cane, causing a bleeding and bruising injury.
Their son reportedly got involved, and Checo Cabral bit him on the right arm and hit him across the back with his cane.
In 2021, Checo Cabral pleaded guilty to a Domestic Abuse Assault Involving a Weapon charge after he chased his wife down the hall of their then-home in the Holiday Lodge manufactured housing community with a large knife, waving it like he was attempting to stab her.
Checo Cabral has also had two previous domestic abuse assault convictions from November 2016 in Muscatine County.
Online ICE information indicates Checo Cabral is a Dominican national. He has since been transported to the Polk County Jail.
