The granddaughter of a Cedar Rapids man found dead in Lake Macbride last weekend has confirmed he died by falling through the ice and drowning.

Amanda Wilson tells KCRG TV-9 that 85-year-old Jack Peacock was ice fishing near the main boat ramp at Lake Macbride State Park Saturday morning when he died. He was alone and didn’t tell anyone he would be there. He was only found after a passerby on a nearby trail saw the broken ice and a pair of gloves and called 9-1-1.

Wilson describes her grandfather as an avid outdoorsman who was in shape and knew how to swim.
Wilson says she hopes her grandfather’s death can serve as a cautionary tale for other ice fishermen. She told KCRG those heading onto the ice should always let someone know where they are, how long they plan to stay, and when they should be expected home. Wilson added ice fishermen should always check the ice thickness regularly as they move around from spot to spot.
The Department of Natural Resources recommends an ice thickness of at least four inches for safe fishing.
