Longtime KWWL television anchor Ron Steele announced Tuesday night that he has come to an agreement to leave the station after 51 years.

Steele made the announcement on KWWL’s 10:00 newscast. The Washington, Iowa native grew up in Wapello and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1973. After working at UI student-run radio station KICR…the precursor to KRUI…Steele was hired by KWWL as a sports reporter. He eventually worked his way up to lead anchor, a position he has held for decades.

Steele also spent eight years on the Board of Directors for The University of Iowa Alumni Association, and was Board Chair in 2012-2013.

Steele’s final day at KWWL will be Thursday, February 27th. At no point during Tuesday night’s announcement did Steele use the word “retire”.
