An inmate at the Johnson County Jail is accused of vandalizing his cell and trying to disarm a jailer.
According to arrest records, at about 9:30 Friday morning 32-year-old James Stewart of North Liberty was involved in a fight with deputies when he grabbed one officer’s Taser. Stewart was eventually detained. The incident was captured on video.
At about 10:00 Saturday morning Stewart was seen on video flushing items down a toilet. The items were determined to be a blanket and part of a mattress. Damage to the sewer system was estimated at $343.
Stewart is charged with Disarming a Peace Officer and 4th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on both counts. He faces a maximum of six years in prison.
Stewart was taken into custody at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort last Wednesday after allegedly skipping his arraignment two days earlier on a Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury charge. Stewart is accused of pouring two cans of beer on his domestic partner before assaulting her last May. He was also reportedly wanted for failing to appear on an Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense charge.
