An Indiana man has been sentenced to life in prison after he was found guilty of murdering an Iowa City Amazon driver. Judge Jason Besler handed down the mandatory sentence to 33-year-old Renard Winfield Jr., of Gary, Indiana, on Friday.

Iowa City Police say Winfield catfished Tommy Curry of Iowa City into meeting him in the parking lot of the Meadowlark Apartment Complex on Lakeside Drive in April of 2021. Winfield posed online as a woman to lure Curry to the location. Once Curry arrived, Winfield approached his vehicle and shot him multiple times. 15 bullets were fired, with 12 striking Curry’s SUV. The shooting was revenge for Curry allegedly shooting Winfield in 2020. No charges were filed in that case because Winfield refused to identify the shooter to police.

Evidence included surveillance video which showed Winfield fleeing the apartment complex in a vehicle registered to his mother. Prosecutors say phone records and videos showed Winfield was brandishing a 9mm pistol in Iowa City around the time of the crime.

In December, a jury deliberated for about four hours before deciding Winfield was guilty of 1st Degree Murder.
