Iowa City man accused of assaulting ex-girlfriend at her high school

Iowa City Police say a suspect assaulted his ex-girlfriend at her high school.

18-year-old Raphael Turner of Cross Park Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 10:15 Wednesday night. According to arrest records, on August 27th of last year Turner was mad at his ex-girlfriend and made statements about harming her when he found her. The next morning, Turner was allegedly waiting for her as she got off a bus arriving at Tate High School on Mall Drive. Police say Turner assaulted the victim, who ran before Turner caught her and punched her and pulled her hair. A witness interrupted the reported assault, and Turner fled the area. The incident was captured on security video.

The alleged victim complained of pain to her jaw. Police say Turner and his victim once dated and had a documented history of violence.

Turner is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.

A no-contact order has been requested.
