A former employee of University of Iowa Health Care accused of using her access to medical records to cyberstalk her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend has been given a deferred judgment, with most charges being dropped.

Judge Jason Burns issued the sentence on Tuesday to 30-year-old Sara Safsaf of Melrose Avenue after she reached a plea deal in October.

Investigators say Safsaf would wait outside her boyfriend’s house to see which women were visiting, then follow them in her car after they left. Safsaf allegedly used her position with UIHC to access one such woman’s medical records without permission on multiple occasions between December of 2022 and January of 2024. She also reportedly set up multiple fake social media accounts to annoy and alarm the woman.

UI Police say Safsaf also used her UIHC computer access to illegally look at her boyfriend’s medical records on multiple occasions. She allegedly used a different phone number to communicate with the man about his other girlfriend while concealing her true identity.

Safsaf was initially charged with eight counts of Unauthorized Computer Access, two counts of Stalking Using a Technological Device and one count of 3rd Degree Harassment. If convicted on all charges, she would have faced a maximum of over 36 years in prison.

Burns gave Safsaf deferred judgments on the two stalking and two of the unauthorized computer access charges, including three years of probation. The rest of the charges were dismissed.
