Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is lending his support to a bill in the Iowa legislature that would establish a new “School of Intellectual Freedom” at the University of Iowa.

The Iowa House is considering a bill that would require the establishment of a new school that would include mandated instruction on American principles, ideals, historical texts and values of free speech, and civil discourse.

Opponents claim the current UI curriculum already covers the issues addressed by the legislation.

Branstad addressed a higher education subcommittee on Tuesday, citing his time as a student at the UI in the 1960’s. He argued with those opposing the measure, claiming, “most of the teachers are socialists”.

Democratic Representative Dave Jacoby of Coralville, who also attended the UI in the 1960’s, had issues with the bill and how it defines the term “intellectual”.

In response to the bill, UI officials announced plans to create a new “Center for Civic Dialogue and Leadership.”

The proposal will go before the Board of Regents next month.

The legislation targets the UI because Iowa State and Northern Iowa are already establishing similar programs.
