City of Iowa City news release
City of Iowa City to host public meeting Jan. 30 and offer survey as planning for Burlington Street Bridge Project begins
The City of Iowa City has begun work on a planning study for the Burlington Street Bridge – Building Better Connections Project, which will ultimately provide improved infrastructure for a new era in Iowa City. The Burlington Street Bridge is located in Downtown Iowa City, near the University of Iowa Power Plant and between Riverside Drive and South Madison Street.

About the Project
The Burlington Street Bridge serves as a critical community connection over the Iowa River. The City is working to develop a plan for critical improvements to this connection for future generations. This project will ultimately replace two bridges with a single bridge and enhance roadway safety and mobility for all modes of transportation, including transit, walking, and biking. It will convert Melrose Avenue and Byington Road to accommodate two-way traffic, improve pedestrian connections over Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue, evaluate multiple intersections for safety enhancements and improvements, and assess the existing Iowa River dam for potential modifications or removal.
