An Iowa City man was arrested Sunday after investigators determined he stole a car and abandoned it in another state after it ran out of gas.
According to the police report, 18-year-old Kale Plummer of Elmridge Avenue entered a parked 2003 Toyota Rav4 on the 800 block of 2nd Avenue at an undetermined time January 12th. Once finding the keys inside, Plummer allegedly drove the vehicle away.
He allegedly got as far as Indiana when the vehicle ran out of gas and Plummer abandoned it on the side of an unknown roadway.
Police interviewed Plummer at around 2:30pm the next day at his residence. He reportedly still had the keys to the Toyota in his possession and turned them over.
The value of the reportedly stolen vehicle was approximately $5000.
A warrant was issued January 15th; Plummer was taken into custody Sunday afternoon. He faces a charge of second degree Theft and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.
