A plea deal has been reached in the case of an Iowa City man accused of setting up social media accounts under a University of Iowa detective’s name in order to harass and intimidate him.
According to the criminal complaint, UI Police Detective Ian Mallory testified at trial last February against two subjects who were found guilty of disorderly conduct for their role in protests on the UI campus in April and October of 2023.
The same day the verdicts were reached, 30-year-old Daniel Kauble, who was sympathetic to the views and activities of the defendants, allegedly set up an email account and an X account under Mallory’s name. He reportedly used the X account to disparage, annoy, harass, and engender public contempt for the detective.
A no-contact order was issued in the case, which Kauble is accused of violating over 20 times.
Kauble was charged with Identity Theft, Tampering with a Witness or Juror, and 3rd Degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, he could have been sentenced to over four years in jail. But court records show on Thursday Kauble reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Details of the agreement have not been released.
Sentencing is set for March 13th.
