A convicted domestic abuser is accused of fraudulently purchasing a firearm in Coralville.

Coralville Police say 33-year-old Mario Flores Alvarenga of 6th Street purchased a gun at Scheels on the night of December 30th. Flores Alvarenga has a domestic abuse conviction from 2022, and, as such, is legally unable to possess a firearm. He allegedly marked down on the required paperwork that he has never been convicted of domestic violence.

Flores Alvarenga was taken into custody by Coralville Police just before 4:00 Friday afternoon after a traffic stop near the intersection of 7th Street and 8th Avenue. He reportedly had a brake light out, and was driving with a barred license.

Flores Alvarenga is charged with Fraudulent Purchase of a Firearm and Driving While Barred. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
