The man accused of stalking Caitlin Clark had his first court appearance Tuesday, and interrupted the proceedings several times .
NBC News reports 55-year-old Michael Lewis let out multiple outbursts after being arrested over the weekend and allegedly making a series of vulgar and threatening online statements toward the WNBA star.
Moments after Marion County Superior Court Judge Angela Davis called Lewis’ case, he shouted out without prompting that he is “guilty as charged.” He later yelled out “Throw me the booky!” and said that because they didn’t include a “Junior” in court records, “I’m Free! I guess you got the wrong guy!”
Lewis said he “sort of” resides in Texas, and lives in his 2016 Toyota Avalon. He was asked if he has mental illness, to which he responded “I need my medicines.”
Despite his earlier impromptu guilty plea, the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Lewis also signed documents where agreed to stay away from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Fever, and Hinkle Fieldhouse, home of Butler University’s basketball team. Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend Connor McCaffery is an assistant coach with the team.
He is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond, which Lewis said he has no intention of posting. He told the judge “I’m here. I’m staying.”
Lewis faces up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted on a stalking charge.
