The Cedar Rapids Development Group (CRDG) and Linn County Gaming Association (LCGA) filed a brief Thursday asking the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to intervene in a pending petition filed by a nearby casino group.
The petition, filed in November by Riverside Casino and Washington County Riverboat Foundation, challenged the Gaming Commission’s authority to give Linn County a gaming license when they vote on their application in February. They say another casino within a short drive of theirs would cannibalize their revenue stream.
Those backing the Cedar Crossing development say the Commission should deny the Riverside petition because Linn County voters voted in favor of pursuing a gaming license.
The Riverside groups have until January 16th to file a response. A hearing on the application is scheduled for January 23rd.
The Cedar Rapids casino project faces another potential hurdle; it’s expected the Iowa Legislature will reintroduce a casino moratorium bill within the first two weeks of this year’s session.
