An Iowa City man wanted for allegedly skipping out on a restaurant bill faces additional charges after police attempted to arrest him.
Police reports indicate 47-year-old Jonathon Kim of Woodland Heights Road walked out on an over $25 bill on the Coralville Strip location of the Vine Tavern and Eatery on October 28th.
Tuesday morning, police caught up with Kim at the North Dodge Street Hy-Vee Gas location and were aware that he had outstanding warrants. He was reportedly sitting in his Hyundai Accent, and alleged that his lawyer had taken care of the warrants. He then rolled up his window and began driving away, reportedly striking a nearby parked vehicle and nearly striking the officer in order to escape.
Kim then allegedly drove across the grass to nearby Prairie Du Chien Road and sped away. Police say he accelerated to speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and ignored their lights and siren.
Officers caught up with Kim outside of his residence later, and he reportedly ignored commands to get on the ground as he attempted to flee into his home. He then allegedly gave a guttural yell and charged an officer. After he was taken to the ground, Kim reportedly tried to strike the officer several times.
Kim faces the original charge of 5th degree theft, along with new charges of Interference with Official Acts with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations with use of a Dangerous Weapon, simple Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Eluding, and Reckless Driving. He could now face a prison sentence of over 16 years if convicted.
