A suspect accused of beating a pair of Iowa City children is wanted by police after he skipped a court hearing earlier this week.
45-year-old Alfred Washington of South Dodge Street had a case management conference set for Monday. Online records show he failed to appear, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Washington was originally booked into the Johnson County Jail in May after police say his 15-year-old son reported that his father had beaten him with wooden paint stirrers, an electric cord, and his fists. A second alleged victim reported Washington had beaten her with a belt and struck her in the chest. Both children’s injuries were corroborated by investigators.
Washington was charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury and Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on both counts, he could face up to ten years in prison.
Washington had also been accused of using a firearm at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area shooting range on Amana Road despite being a felon. Those charges were dropped last month.
