A Coralville woman was arrested after an investigation discovered she’d been defrauding two area Hy-Vee stores.

The incidents reportedly involve 43-year-old Abigail Kite of 7th Avenue. Police say between October 17th and December 2nd, she went to the Hy-Vee locations on Crosspark Avenue and 8th Street in Coralville  and used the self-scanner to check out. She would allegedly scan a UPC code that she brought with her and was attached to the palm of her hand.  She would then scan that UPC code instead of the product she was purchasing.

Loss prevention believes Kite defrauded the stores of over $1100.  The incidents were reportedly captured on surveillance video.

She previously was arrested at Wal-Mart for using the same method of operation.  Under Miranda, Kite allegedly admitted to having a lot of personal problems in her life.

She has been charged with 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years if convicted.
