An area transient was arrested on Christmas evening after allegedly chasing after and hitting another man with a lead pipe.

At around 6:15pm, 35-year-old Roy Vowels was verbally arguing with the man, and reportedly stated several times that he would hit the man with a lead pipe and kill him if he came near his South Gilbert Street encampment.  Police say the victim recorded the altercation on his phone.

Vowels allegedly chased after the victim multiple times. The victim told officers that Vowels punched him and hit him with the pipe.

Vowels was arrested and charged with simple assault and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail. A no-contact order was issued by Judge Jason Burns on Monday.

Vowels was also wanted for an incident that occurred December 22nd on the Iowa River Corridor Trail at the Railroad Bridge, where he allegedly jumped on a victim and punched him in the face, resulting in bruising in the victim’s right eye.  He was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor.
