A Hope House resident is accused of threatening his housemates while having a smoke.

38-year-old Ronald Givins was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before noon on Tuesday. The Iowa Department of Corrections reports Givins walked out onto the smoking patio of the Holiday Road facility just after 9:30 Monday night and pointed at the others present, requesting that they keep his name out of their mouths. Givins then reportedly targeted one person in particular, telling them, “I’ll beat the f— out of you” and, “When we get to work we gonna see.” One minute later Givins allegedly repeated “When we go to work we gonna see”, and then threatened he would, “beat your bitch ass up”. Givins then reportedly finished up with, “Wanna go in the bathroom?” and “I bet I leave you in that bitch” before leaving the patio.

Givins was sentenced to spend one year in Hope House in July after he pleaded guilty to charges that he spent over $200 at the Kirkwood Avenue Conoco station with a credit card he stole during a residential burglary on Christmas Day of 2023. He also pleaded guilty to charges he stole another credit card from the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center on South Gilbert Street and used it to make thousands of dollars in purchases at the Hampton Inn on Sturgis Corner Drive, the Waterfront Hy-Vee, and the Iowa City Walmart on Highway 1 West.
