The City of Iowa City is offering tips on how residents can dispose of their Christmas trees.

Iowa City curbside customers can bring natural, unflocked trees to the curb for collection at 7 a.m. on their normal trash and recycling pickup day. Remove all decorations first and do not place your tree in a plastic bag. For more information, visit www.icgov.org/compost.

Johnson County residents who do not have curbside composting can bring natural, unflocked trees to the Iowa City Landfill’s Compost Facility to be composted at no cost. The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Beginning on Jan. 11th, Saturday hours at the landfill will change to 7 a.m. to noon.

Artificial trees can be reused or donated to a local secondhand store, if still usable. If artificial trees are past use, they are considered trash. Iowa City curbside customers can schedule a bulky item pickup to have them collected at the curb, or Johnson County residents can transport them directly to the landfill to be disposed of. For more information about the landfill, visit www.icgov.org/landfill.
