An Iowa City man has reached a plea deal in a stabbing incident this past spring.

Police responded to the area of Washington and Clinton streets at 9:10pm April 24th on reports of a fight and located a victim with multiple stab wounds that was taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment.

The alleged suspect, identified as 55-year-old Lonzo Powers, had no injuries and was not struck by the victim prior to the reported stabbing. He was charged with Willful Injury causing Serious Injury, a Class C Felony.

Court records now show Powers has pleaded to a lesser charge of assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. He is asking to be sentenced to supervised release, a fine and a percentage of court costs.
He was ordered to be released from custody last week. A sentencing hearing is set for January 13th.

Powers still faces a stabbing charge from an incident this past summer. Iowa City Police allege he attacked another man with a box cutter outside his residence at the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street August 22nd. The victim had injuries consistent with being slashed by a box cutter, and he received several stitches at local hospital.

Powers allegedly admitted to slashing the man with the box cutter. He’s charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury, Going Armed with Intent, and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 12 years in prison.  He has pleaded not guilty and  has a case management conference for that incident scheduled for January 13th.
