A homeless woman has been given a suspended sentence in an Iowa City stabbing case.

Iowa City Police say 44-year-old Kelli Rehwinkel chased and attacked a victim with a knife on the 300 block of McCollister Boulevard back in October. The man was stabbed in the stomach and right side. He was suffering from an open wound to his stomach when he was found by police.

Rehwinkel allegedly chased a second person while wielding the knife, but they were able to escape.
Rehwinkel was charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury, Assault While Displaying a Weapon and Going Armed With Intent. If convicted on all charges, she would have faced a maximum of 12 years in prison.

Online court records show last month Rehwinkel pleaded guilty to a charge of Assault While Displaying a Weapon as part of a deal with prosecutors and was given a suspended sentence and fine. She was also ordered to spend up to one-hundred days in a residential facility.

Rehwinkel was accused of pulling a knife on another person at Shelter House last February, but an Assault While Displaying a Weapon charge was later dropped. In September, she knocked another Shelter House guest unconscious during a physical altercation, leading to a 12-day jail sentence.
