An Iowa City man was arrested after burglaries committed over the last two weeks.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Laron Johnson of Nevada Avenue was seen on home surveillance at approximately 2:37am Tuesday attempting to gain entrance into a St. Thomas Court residence. The footage reportedly made Johnson easily identifiable.
He allegedly left footprints in the snow that matched impressions of those found at a different burglary scene where Johnson successfully stole property before arriving at the victim’s residence. In that incident, he stole items from a vehicle.
Last month, Johnson committed thefts on the 1800 block of Friendship Street. At approximately 6pm on the 25th, Johnson was seen taking items from two vehicles on the property and breaking into a nearby shed, successfully taking items and later posting the items for sale on Facebook.
A warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest, and he was found Wednesday morning at the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street. Johnson reportedly told authorities he had marijuana inside his backpack.
He faces a charge of 2nd degree Attempted Burglary, 3rd degree Vehicle burglary, and second offense Marijuana Possession for Tuesday’s incident. For the November incidents, he faces two counts of 3rd degree vehicle burglary, 3rd degree burglary, and 3rd degree theft. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 19 years in prison.
