An area transient was charged with a felony after refusing to leave a local convenience store and being found with marijuana on his person.

The incident occurred late Tuesday afternoon at the Casey’s on the 1900 block of Broadway Street. 28-year-old Cordero Bertling was called in by staff because he refused to leave the premises.  Upon arrival, officers gave several orders to Bertling to leave the property but he allegedly didn’t listen.

Police followed Bertling off the property, but he promptly ran back and was arrested.

A search incident to arrest reportedly turned up a nugget of marijuana.

Because Bertling has two prior Johnson County marijuana possession convictions, one from July of this year and one from April 2022, he was charged with his third offense, which is a Class D Felony punishable by up to five years in prison if convicted.

Bertling was also charged with Interference with Official Acts and Trespassing.
