The City of Cedar Rapids has released their year-to-date crime statistics, and data shows decreases in many of the major categories measured.
According to the release, The six stats that offer the best picture of where the City stands with regard to crime are:
• Homicide
• Aggravated Assault
• Burglary
• Theft from Vehicle
• Theft of Vehicle
• Shots Fired
Data through November 2024 continue to show positive progress in a total reduction of Shots Fired,
Violent Crime, and Property Crime. If current trends continue, Cedar Rapids will close out 2024 with
notable improvements in most crime categories.
There has only been one reported homicide in the city this year, compared to 8 last year and the five year average of 9.
Officers and Investigators continue to find weapons in the possession of those ineligible – generally
during calls for service. The most common reasons for being deemed ineligible stems from drug
possession or intoxication.
Shoplifting remains a concern for retailers, and Cedar Rapids Police are finding some success in identifying and making arrests of shoplifters with businesses who install high-quality camera systems,
and those with vigilant staff who can alert police in time to intervene.
