The Riverside Casino and Golf Resort and the Washington County Riverboat Association have filed a petition opposing the granting of a gaming license to a proposed Cedar Rapids casino.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission heard comments from both sides on Thursday on the campus of Kirkwood Community College.  Riverside casino officials argued in their petition that the 2021 vote in which Linn County residents approved efforts to pursue a casino for Cedar Rapids did not follow Iowa Code. Riverside backers say the wording of the ballot asked voters if they wanted to continue gambling in the county, even though gambling has never been legal in Linn County. Cedar Rapids casino supporters called the move a delay tactic and argued Linn County residents knew on what they were voting.

The Racing and Gaming Commission declined to delay their decision, which is set for a February 6th vote.

The Cedar Rapids casino would be built at the former site of Cooper’s Mill across the Cedar River from Quaker Oats.
