A Kalona man faces a number of charges after getting into an accident Thursday night.
According to the criminal complaint, 42-year-old Christopher Onnen’s Iphone called 911 after detecting a car crash. He reportedly stayed on the line with dispatchers and stated he had gone into a ditch but didn’t need any assistance from deputies.
When authorities arrive on scene, it was discovered that Onnen’s Mercury Grand Marquis had gone into a ditch, over a barbed wire fence, and landed in a farm field. Onnen was nowhere to be found, so deputies paid a visit to his residence.
Upon arrival, they heard Onnen’s mother speaking on the phone and him saying he was still outside but knew that authorities were looking for him. Deputies claim that the mother was uncooperative, and that Onnen refused to turn on or answer his phone for them.
A check of the man’s driving record showed him as barred with two withdraws in effect.
Onnen was charged with two criminal counts, driving while barred and operating without interlock device. He was also ticketed for failure to maintain control, driving while suspended, and failure to provide financial responsibility. He faces up to 25 months in jail if convicted on the criminal offenses.
