Cedar Rapids firefighters were busy Friday night, tackling two incidents.

The first occurred at 7:38 pm, when dispatch got a call about smoke in the 800 block of 20th Street SE.  Upon arrival, the smoke was discovered coming from the second floor of a single family home.

Crews extinguished the fire, but the home suffered smoke and water damage on the second floor.  Five adults and several dogs were able to escape without injury. Firefighters located additional dogs in the home that were unharmed and given to their owners.

No injuries or medical treatment were noted.

It was determined that the smoke alarms in the structure weren’t functioning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Then around 11pm, crews were dispatched to 1100 block of 12th Street NE on reports of a house on fire.  Upon arrival, fire was found on the exterior of the home with extension into the kitchen area.  The fire was deemed under control within 15 minutes.

No one was home at the time of the incident.  Smoke alarms were working in the home. The cause of the second fire is also under investigation.
