North Liberty staff has begun draining approximately two feet of water depth from Liberty Centre Pond on West Cherry Street in preparation for erosion control work to be completed by a contractor in December.
City officials say water has slowly eroded the gravel foundation under the perimeter of the boulder-lined pond since it opened 18 years ago, and rock is sinking in several areas.
Temporarily decreasing the water depth will leave the pond’s north point dry through the winter. As a retention pond, it is expected that Liberty Centre Pond will refill quickly in the spring by collecting runoff from nearby businesses and residences.
Access points to the water and sections of the walking trail may be limited at times in December while work is being performed.
