The Johnson County Board of Supervisors has loosened restrictions on consumer fireworks usage in rural areas.
The changes, approved this week, allow consumer fireworks to be used on or around July 4th and New Year’s Eve in unincorporated Johnson County. It also sets restrictions on how close consumer fireworks can be set off near spectator viewing areas, parking areas, and buildings, depending on their strength and type.
Up until now Solon had been the only municipality in Johnson County that allowed fireworks usage, limiting them to 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on July 1st through 3rd and 9 to 11 on July 4th. Now all rural Johnson County residents can set off fireworks without a permit on the following dates:
- July 3rd through July 5th between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.
- Dec. 31st between 7 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.; and
- Jan. 1st between 12 midnight and 12:30 a.m.
Johnson County Sheriff Brad Kunkel has said the limited hours will allow those who have issues with fireworks to prepare accordingly instead of having to deal with them daily in the weeks leading up to Independence Day and New Year’s Eve.
