An Indiana man was arrested on theft and fraud charges after allegedly selling a trailer that didn’t belong to him.
On October 3, 34-year-old Michael Neuenschwander of Kendalville was arrested for theft and traffic offenses for an incident in Lone Tree. At the time of arrest, he was driving a Ford F150 with an attached American Hauler Trailer. Both were towed to Holiday Wrecker and Crane in Tiffin.
Neuenschwander was released from jail the next day, and went to get his vehicle and trailer, but couldn’t afford the bill. He then decided to sell the trailer to another individual.
A bill of sale was drawn up and signed by both parties, including each person’s name, date of sale, cost of item and VIN for the trailer.
Later that day, the Decatur Illinois Police Department reported the trailer as having been stolen from their jurisdiction sometime between October 1st and 2nd. The trailer is worth approximately $4500.
A warrant for Neuenschwander’s arrest was issued October 22nd. He was taken into custody on Monday and faces charges of 2nd degree Theft and 2nd degree Fraud. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
Neuenschwander will be arraigned at a later date.
