Coralville man accused of assaulting fellow inmate at Johnson County Jail

A Coralville man was charged with assault Wednesday night after an incident at the Johnson County Jail.

At approximately 9pm, 37-year-old Joseph Jones was reportedly observed on jail video get into an altercation with another individual.  Jones allegedly tried to rip a phone cord out of the wall in order to use it as a weapon against the victim.

He reportedly grabbed the victim’s neck during the altercation and left several marks. The phone cord was damaged, and it was estimated to cost about $300 to replace it.

Jones was booked into the jail on October 29th on counts of Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury and Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow. He now faces additional charges of Assault causing Bodily Injury and 4th degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all counts, Jones could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.
