A Solon man with a dangerously high blood alcohol content faces numerous felony charges after his two children were seriously injured in a golf cart crash.

The incident in question occurred just after 6:15 on the night of July 27th. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Ethan Eggers of Palmer Court NE was driving a golf cart with his two children inside on Macbride Place NE when he proceeded through the intersection with Highway 382 without obeying the stop sign. The golf cart crashed into the side of an SUV hauling a boat on a trailer, causing the cart to flip and eject all three passengers. The two-year-old girl suffered a skull fracture and hematoma, while the five-year-old boy suffered cuts and abrasions. Both children were taken to the University of Iowa Campus Medical Center.

Deputies say Eggers admitted to drinking and provided two vials of blood for testing. His blood alcohol content came back as .377%, and on Halloween he was arrested and charged with Serious Injury By Vehicle, Child Endangerment Causing Serious Injury and Child Engagement Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on all three counts, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. Eggers also faces numerous traffic citations, including Failure to Provide Proof of Liability.

Eggers has a previous Operating While Intoxicated conviction from 2019. The National Library of Medicine shows a BAC of above a .30 could result in unconsciousness or even death. Anything above a .40 could lead to a coma or sudden death.
