Hawkeye fans clamoring for a quarterback change got their wish Saturday afternoon, and the results were exactly what they were hoping for in a 40-14 blowout victory over Northwestern.
The change came after Northwestern returned a Cade McNamara pass 85 yards to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter, leading to Sullivan entering the game.
Iowa added two points with a safety after a Max Llewellyn sack in the end zone.
Sullivan started with three three-and-outs before leading a two-minute drill at the end of the half to set up a 26-yard Kaleb Johnson touchdown run to make it 12-7 Iowa at halftime.
Iowa opened the second half with an impressive drive capped off by a six-yard Sullivan touchdown run.
Kaden Wetjen had a 85-yard punt return after the ensuing Northwestern possession, putting Iowa up 26-7.
The scoring continued with a 41-yard Johnson touchdown run late in the 3rd.
A Jay Higgins interception led to another Johnson touchdown, this one from 25 yards out to make it Iowa 40-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Northwestern finally got on the board again with a 72-yard punt return with 6:39 remaining, making the final score 40-14.
Sullivan finished the game passing 9 of 14 for 79 yards and a quarterback rating of 111.7. He also ran eight times for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Johnson had 109 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.
Iowa improves to 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten. Up next, the Hawkeyes host Wisconsin next Saturday for a blackout game and a military appreciation game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 on NBC.
