UI student accused of trying to steal “Exit” sign from downtown Iowa City nightclub

Patrons trying to steal signs from bars is nothing new, but a University of Iowa engineering student allegedly made it obvious when he reportedly tried to steal the one above the front door.

Iowa City Police say a 20-year-old from Evanston, Illinois was seen leaving Coe Cantina on South Clinton Street…the former site of One Eyed Jake’s and the Clinton Street Social Club…with the “exit” sign. He reportedly showed signs of intoxication, registered a breath alcohol level of .136%, and was in possession of two fake ID’s.

The student was charged with 5th Degree Theft, Public Intoxication, and two counts of Possession of a Fake ID. He could spend up to 26 months in jail, if convicted on all counts.
