A biplane landed on Highway 218 in Iowa City Saturday afternoon after running out of gas.

The Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center began receiving calls about the incident at 5:45 p.m. The plane landed in the southbound lanes between Interstate 80 and Melrose Avenue, then was able to move off into the west ditch to avoid blocking traffic. There were no reported injuries.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene a short time later to direct traffic. Once the plane was refueled enough to take off again, the Iowa State Patrol temporarily blocked the highway so the plane could return to the air and land safely at the nearby Iowa City Municipal Airport.
