An Iowa City man who allegedly cursed out a convenience store employee after refusing to buy beer for him allegedly stole a six-pack and was picked up for driving recklessly.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:25 Sunday night at the Casey’s on South Market Street in Solon.  43-year-old Kenneth Davis of 480th Street SW allegedly stole a six-pack of beer after trying to have customers and the store clerk buy beer and cigarettes for him,  When they refused, he reportedly called them rude names and cursed at them before leaving.

Less than 15 minutes later, a deputy located Davis on Highway 1 South operating a motor vehicle that was originally reported stolen.  He allegedly threw a beer can out his window. The vehicle matched the description of the one Davis left in from Casey’s, and a traffic stop was attempted. Davis instead reportedly accelerated  to estimated speeds of 80 miles per hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone, disregarding the safety of other motorists on the road.

Davis was eventually apprehended; an open can of beer was allegedly found inside his vehicle.

Davis was charged for 5th degree Theft and 3rd degree Harassment for the incident at the convenience store. Additionally, he was charged with littering, eluding, speeding, reckless driving, and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. If convicted on all counts, Davis could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
