The Iowa football team bounced back from last week’s loss at #2 Ohio State with an impressive 40-16 victory over defending national runner-up Washington.

Washington marched down the field on their opening drive, but Iowa’s Yahya Black blocked a field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless. Kaleb Johnson capped off the ensuing Hawkeye drive with a six-yard touchdown run to give Iowa a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Washington tied the game early in the second quarter on its next drive.

On Washington’s following possession, Iowa’s Max Llewellyn recovered a fumble on the Husky 19, which led to a Drew Stevens 37-yard field goal and a 10-7 Hawkeye lead with 4:43 left in the half.

Cade McNamara hit Johnson with a 18-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter to give Iowa a 17-7 lead. Washington added a late field goal to cut the lead to 17-10 with less than a minute left. But Johnson broke a 53-yard run to set up a 46-yard field goal from Stevens as time expired, giving Iowa a 20-10 halftime lead.

Stevens added another field goal halfway through the 3rd quarter, extending the lead to 23-10.
Johnson started the fourth quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run to put the Hawkeyes up 30-10.

Washington turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, and on the next play McNamara found Dayton Howard for a 33-yard touchdown and a 37-10 lead.

A 51-yard Stevens field goal made it 40-10 after Washington again turned the ball over on downs in their own territory.

Washington added a late touchdown to make the final score 40-16.

40 points marks Iowa’s highest total in a Big Ten game since 2021. At one point, the Hawkeyes scored on seven consecutive drives.

Johnson finished the day with 166 yards rushing, 22 receiving yards, and three total touchdowns.

Up next Iowa travels to Michigan State for a 6:30 kickoff next Saturday on NBC.
