The Cedar Rapids Fire Department battled a 2-alarm fire Thursday night.

According to a release, Firefighters were called to the 6900 block of Bowman Lane NE at 8:54p.m. following the report of a house fire. Cedar Rapids Police were first on-scene with fire crews arriving moments later.

Firefighting divisions were deployed to the front and back of the home in an effort to extinguish the fire from both sides – as well as interior fire suppression operations. The fire’s size and intensity grew and required Firefighters to abandon the house for a short time and assume a defensive strategy.

A second alarm was called bringing more equipment and firefighters to the scene.  Aerial operations continued and eventually reduced the fire to the point teams could resume interior efforts.

There were adult occupants home at the time the fire started.  They were able to escape safely.  The fire was called “under control” at 10:21p.m.

There is extensive damage to the front, back and roof.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
