An Iowa City man who allegedly assaulted his intimate partner in August has been arrested after evidence of the incident was extracted from the victim’s cellphone.

Police were called to the Plum Street residence of 44-year-old Lawrence Bohnenkamp September 12th on reports of a domestic incident. The victim reported an incident of assault committed by Bohnenkamp on August 8th and claimed to have the assault recorded on a phone.

The next day, the woman met with an officer at the Iowa City Police Department and showed them a message where Bohnenkamp reportedly admitted to beating and strangling the victim.  The woman stated that she had recorded the incident and couldn’t breathe while Bohnenkamp was reportedly strangling her. The officer seized the phone and got a warrant to extract the date of the incident.

The data was accessed on September 28th, finding an over 22-minute video showing Bohnenkamp and the woman arguing. He was allegedly seen screaming at the victim, striking her and strangling her. The woman reportedly begged Bohnenkamp to stop and said she was leaving, but he told her she was staying and continued the assault.

Bohnenkamp was arrested on a warrant Monday afternoon. He was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and False Imprisonment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between the couple, who share a child.
